Richard Elwood Harris ’35

RICHARD HARRIS, of Hope, N.J., died Nov. 19, 1992, at a nursing home in Frelinghuysen. He was 80 and had retired in 1977 as a V.P. and senior trust officer of the Midlantic National Bank in Newark, N.J., where he had worked since 1932.

Richard was a civic leader in Cedar Grove, where he lived most of his life. He had been president of the board of education for 15 years and also was on the executive committee of the Associated Board of Education of Essex County as V.P. and president. He was a chairman and charter trustee of the Community Church and served on the boards of a hospital, library, recreation committee, and Community Chest of Cedar Grove, as well as on the board committee of the Cub Scouts, the Boy Scouts, and Explorer Troops. The Rotary International named him a Paul Harris Fellow, named for the founder of Rotary and not related to Dick. In retirement, Dick belonged to the Hope Historical Society and an ecology group.

Dick was able to attend Princeton for only one year, but that period was important to him and his future. His father, Albert W, was a member of the Class of 1898, and his grandfather Elwood C. was Class of 1868. He is survived by his widow, Helen Babcock Harris, and sons Frederick A. and William B., to all of whom the Class sends its sincere sympathy.
