RICHARD STARR, RENOWNED ARCHEOLOGIST, passed away Mar. 9, 1994, in Leesburg, Va. He was 94. An authentic "Old China Hand," he received his bachelor's degree from Cornell in 1925, then studied Mandarin in Peking and went to Chinese Turkestan on a Harvard expedition. He then returned to the U.S. and worked ac the Cleveland Museum of Art and at the Fogg (Harvard) Museum of Art.
After several expeditions to the Middle East, he was a research fellow at the Fogg Museum from 1931-35. Soon after that, Princeton awarded him master's and doctoral degrees in Oriental languages and literatures.
From 1938-41, he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study and served as a visiting lecturer at the university. He also won a Guggenheim fellowship and a Carnegie scholarship.
During WWII, he served the Office of Naval Intelligence. He also worked for the State Dept. and for the C.I.A. as a Middle East specialist for many years.
His wife, Dorothy, preceded him in death in 1982. He is survived by one son and two grandsons. To his family, we extend sincere sympathy.
