Richard Henry Spencer ’48

Dick was equally distinguished for his loyalty to Princeton and to the Class of 1948. At the time of his death he was our Planned Giving chairman. He had been active in the Kansas City Princeton Club as president and with the schools and scholarship committee.

A native of Kansas City, Dick joined us by way of Pembroke Country Day School. At Princeton he played freshman football and junior varsity lacrosse, and was a member of Cap and Gown. He graduated in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in basic engineering.

Following graduation and law school, Dick returned to Kansas City to join Spencer Fane Britt & Browne, where he spent his entire career, specializing in corporate law. He always dedicated a great deal of time to the arts in Kansas City. He served for many years on the Kansas City Symphony board and was an early leader and past president of the Performing Arts Foundation. Last December, Dick and his wife, Katherine, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In addition to traveling all over the world, Kathy and Dick were avid duck and upland-game hunters.

The class has lost a stalwart colleague. Our heartfelt condolences go to Kathy and their daughters, Christine, Katherine ’85, and Elizabeth.
