Richard K. Sands ’49

Body

Dick died peacefully Aug. 28, 2010, after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 82.

Dick was born July 23, 1928, the son of Walter Harold and Marion Kincaid Sands, and was raised in Mount Vernon, N.Y. His grandfather, Elmer Lincoln Kincaid, was the mayor of Mount Vernon. Dick graduated from A.B. Davis High School and then from his beloved Princeton University with an economics degree.

Highlights of his Princeton career were playing football and his time at Witherspoon and Campus Club.

Dick served his country proudly in the Korean War on the U.S.S. Grasp as a hard-hat deep-sea demolition diver earning hazardous duty pay. He continued in the Navy Reserve as a lieutenant. He began his civilian career at Acme Steel and eventually became the consummate entrepreneur with Ribet Sales, an automotive and tire-repair distributorship.

Dick was divorced from the former Alice Howland. He is survived by his wife, friend, and partner of 27 years, Roseanne Shegirian; three loving daughters, Debra, Kimberly, and Jacqueline; six beloved grandchildren; his sister, Margo Meyers; and a niece. The class extends deepest sympathy to all.
