Richard Leigh Fitzgerald ’35

Dick, also known to us as “Fitz,” and known to his family as “Leigh,” died Sept. 20, 2007, at Brookhaven in Lexington, Mass., after a series of illnesses.

Born in Boston, Dick came to us from Roxbury Latin School. At Princeton he majored in history, was a member of the University Band and the choir, and roomed in South Edwards with Al Bender.
Dick spent his entire career in the utilities industry, starting with the Narragansett Electric Co. and then its parent, the New England Electric System, where he rose to the position of vice chairman and served on NEES’s board. He was expert in rates, finances, corporate affiliations and operations, and nuclear power, often testifying before the SEC and other regulatory bodies. He was a longtime board member of West Newton (Mass.) Savings Bank, a trustee of Roxbury Latin School, and a director of Massachusetts Blue Cross. In retirement, he spent two years as an adjunct professor at Boston University’s School of Management.

Dick’s first wife, Frances, and second wife, Betsy, predeceased him, the latter by one day. He is survived by four children, including David ’61 and Gordon ’72; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. We join them in mourning his passing.
