Richard M. Schisgall ’53

ON APR. 19, 1991, the Class lost a devoted member when Dick Schisgall died of cancer.

After high school in Great Neck, N.Y., Dick majored in biology as part of his premed studies at Princeton. He devoted endless hours to the DAILY PRINCETONIAN,

where he served as sports editor. He entered N.Y.U. Medical School after Princeton and completed his training in pediatric surgery at Bellevue Hospital, N.Y., and Detroit Children's Hospital.

Dick began his 25year surgical practice in Silver Springs, Md., and soon became a leading independent practitioner in the field of pediatric surgery. Four days befpre his death, he was named "Clinician of the Year" by the Montgomery County Medical Society. Dick served in a moving credo, "Early in my practice, I decided that no child's operative discomfort would go for naught, but that each child's surgery would be woven into a broader fabric of experience." In his lengthy career, he operated on more than 10,000 children.

Dick is survived by his widow, Harriet; three children, Laura Judith, Lesley Jane Courier, and David Nathan; one grandchild; and his brother Jim '56.
