Richard Matthews Griffith ’48

Dick Griffith died Oct. 13, 2008, at home in Belvedere, Calif., after a long illness.  

A native of Los Angeles and a graduate of Thacher School in Ojai, he joined us courtesy of the Navy’s program at Princeton. He majored in SPIA and joined Cannon Club.

For two years after graduating from Princeton in 1948, Dick lived and traveled in Spain and throughout Europe. On returning home he had brief stints in banking, investments, and as a museum administrator; he found his métier in commercial real estate. He was known for his integrity and sartorial elegance.

Dick was a dedicated outdoorsman, excelling in sailing, duck hunting, and fly-fishing. A longtime member of both the St. Francis and San Francisco yacht clubs, he was known in sailing circles as Dick the Duke.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Sallie; his daughter, Sara; and his dog, Charlie.
