Richard Sawyer Pieters ’30

DICK PIETERS DIED Jan. 23, 1992, in Sun City, Ariz. Despite suffering from chronic leukemia, he remained active until the end. just three days before he died, he was recording a math text for the blind, an activity which kept him busy following his retirement in 1982.

Dick came to Princeton from Mercersberg and roomed with his brother Pete '30, who died in 1958. Dick was born in Seoul, Korea, and following graduation he returned to Seoul to teach. He then returned to Princeton and earned his M.A. in math. After teaching three years at the George School, he moved to Andover, where he taught for 37 years. After retiring from Andover, Dick taught at Groton, the Univ. of Oregon, Hockaday, and Moses Brown School, retiring in 1982. He then moved to Sun City, where he was active in Reading for the Blind, Until the last two years, he continued to return to his summer home in central New Hampshire.

Dick is survived by his widow, Norma; two sons, Richard A.70 and Rev. Stephen Pieters; and one granddaughter. To them we extend our deep sympathy on the loss of this fine man who devoted his entire life to teaching others.
