Richard W. Sylvester ’39

Body

Having suffered a stroke last summer, Dick died of heart failure on Dec. 4, at his home in Riverside, Conn. He entered Princeton from the Hill School, where he was captain of the soccer team and president of the Class of 1935. He brought his enthusiasm for soccer with him to Princeton, where he played varsity soccer for three years.

Right after graduation he began a 30-year career in air transportation with Panagra Airways and Braniff Int. His children were born in Panama and Peru, while he was with Panagra, before returning to the U.S. in 1949. In 1970, he switched to the travel business, serving as manager of Putnam Trust Travel in Greenwich until he retired in 1981.

Dick and Martha Anne Ackerman were married in 1941. Anne died in Aug. 1990. Surviving are three children: Richard W. Jr. '65, Margaret Anne Schreiber, and John McFall, as well as nine granddaughters and one grandson. To all this extended family, with whom we share many happy memories of Anne and Dick, we offer our sympathy.
