Richard Wallower ’44

Body

DICK DIED of cancer Mar. 16, 1993. He joined us at Princeton after graduating from St. Paul's. Freshman year, he roomed at 202 Foulke with George Palmer, his thirdform roommate at St. Paul's. He was a member of WhigClio. He withdrew from Princeton in 1941, and entered our burgeoning defense industry in production control at Grumman Aircraft Corp. on Long Island. Dick had had a colostomy in childhood that imposed limits on his activities. It was a cross he was to bear until his death at 72, and one he never mentioned. He left Grumman in 1946 and joined his father's brokerage Firm, Rutter Co., where he became a general partner in 1951. He remained a successful member of the New York Stock Exchange until his retirement in 1982. Dick had three marriages. He wed Ursula in 1964. They had a full and happy life together. He was an enthusiastic yachtsman and golfer, and a former commodore of the Port Washington Yacht Club. He gave of his time and support to his parish and to the Buckley Country Day School on the North Shore. He enjoyed travel and his last 10 years at Miles Grant in Stuart, Fla. George Palmer wrote that Dick loved Princeton and would have stuck with the class for the long pull if he could. To Ursula, his children, and friends go our deepest sympathies.
