Richard A. Woods ’30

RICHARD WOODS, a former partner at the investment banking firm of Merrill Lynch, died Jan. 31, 1994, at his home in Greenwich, Conn. He was 86 years old and died of cancer.

Richard was the second generation of his family to become a partner of Merrill Lynch; his father, William, was one of the original partners of Merrill Lynch, E. A. Pierce & Co.

Richard was born in El Paso, Tex., in 1907. After being at Princeton with our class, he started his brokerage business career in L.A. with Wilcox, Drake & Co, which was bought by E. A. Pierce, and later by Merrill Lynch. He married the former Frances Reis Stent of San Francisco in 1935. She predeceased him in 1988.

During WWII, Richard served in the command of various minesweepers, and left as a It. commander. Returning to Merrill Lynch, he was made a partner in 1954 with responsibilities in underwriting and syndication. Shortly thereafter, he became a member of the New York Stock Exchange, representing Merrill Lynch there until he retired in 1967.

Richard is survived by his daughter, Frances; by his son, Richard M.; and by four grandchildren. To all of them, the class extends its most sincere sympathies,
