Robert Arthur Lockwood ’38

Body

BOB LOCKWOOD died Apr. 26, 1993, of inoperable heart problems complicated by diabetes.

A Lawrenceville product, he was with us at Princeton for three years, leaving to attend business school. He put in two years in the marines, where he worked on LEATHERNECK magazine. Then he worked in circulation for TIME, LIFE, and the NEW YORK TIMES. In 1952, he went to Mexico to develop a distribution business for Englishlanguage publications, where as he put it (with his usual wry humor), he used "negotiating and persuasion techniques honed in the marine corps," After 20 years, it was the fifthlargest customer in the world for Englishlanguage publications and books. Then came, at the age of 49, a heart attack that persuaded him to sell his business and retire to a new life in Napa, Calif. The installation of seven heart bypasses a few years ago renewed his lease on life, aided by his sense of humor.

Bob is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ellen Willard, and son Leigh. Bob's eldest son, Robert Jr., predeceased him.
