Robert Bernard Hybel ’51
THE REVFREND ROBERT B. HYBEL, retired rector of two Episcopal churches in Westchester County, N.Y., died June 27, 1992, after a long illness. At Princeton he was a member of the Canterbury Fellowship and both the marching and symphonic bands. He majored in architecture, which was to have been his profession.
A remarkable recovery from illness significantly altered his life's course. He entered General Theological Seminary in N.Y.C., was ordained in 1956, and remained for two years as a fellow and tutor. He then chose to become pastor to two small country parishes, St. Luke's in Somers and St. James's in Salem.
Spencer Welch '48 remembers, "Those of us who were Bob's parishioners were profoundly influenced by his gentle, Firm, wise leadership. He made both churches community power centers, enlisting them in bringing reason, decency, and Christian standards to bear on pressing social ills, particularly violence, alcoholism, and drugs. He served on community and diocesan boards and was chairman of both the Narcotics Guidance Center and the Westchester Guidance Center,"
Bob is survived by his widow, Kay; daughter Jennifer Fish; sons Mark, Matthew, and Paul; and four grandchildren. The Class is indeed fortunate to have had Bob Hybel as a member.
