Robert Gillespie Brown ’44

Body

BROWNIE'S TOUGH OLD HEART gave out Jan. 11, 1993, in the Norwalk Hospital, after a long illness. The last year of his life was difficult, but this indefatigable guy stuck to his personal calendar of commitments and made them all. He finished the game. Bob came to Princeton from Pittsburgh. He roomed with Bickel, Ogden, Linc Johnson, John Myers, Crawford, and Kelley. Cottage was his beloved club. He went Navy and saw action in the Pacific as exec. and skipper of an L.C.I. He left the Navy as a lieutenant and returned to Princeton to earn his degree. He then signed with TIME, Inc., for 30 years in advertising sales. Bob married twice, raising five children from his first marriage, to Margaret Clarkson. In 1981, he wed Gloria Boyd Major and then lived 12 good years with her in New Canaan, Conn. An old friend said of him that his heart "wasn't all his." Indeed it wasn't. He gave a piece of it to everyone and everything he touched. His loyalties were huge, his interests diverse. He somehow made time for family, friends, church, business, sports, community, little theater footlights, you name it. He wrapped himself in Princeton Orange and Black; he was our Class president from '79 to '84. Princeton's athletic fortunes were his heartbeat. His social associations were too numerous to list here. Brownie's untiring enthusiasms, his humor, his affection were gifts to all who knew him. To Gloria; his sons Garrett, Clark, and Robin; and his daughters Sara and Molly; please know of our pleasure in his company and our sadness in losing him.
