Robert H. Hall ’61

Bob Hall, known as “Tzaddi,” died Oct. 17, 2009, at home in Seattle.  

Born in Ann Arbor, Mich., he moved to Colorado at an early age, where his exposure to rock climbing and mountaineering began a lifelong journey for him. His family then returned to the Midwest, where Bob graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill.  

At Princeton, Bob ate at Key and Seal. He left the University after his junior year and graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1962 with a degree in architecture. He worked in this field for the rest of his life in many cities, including Seattle and Vancouver for the last 30 years.  

His experiences in the counterculture led him to the long practice of Zen and Tibetan Buddhism, which may be the origin of his unusual nickname. His contact with Princeton and the class was fleeting, and we wish that we had seen more of him over the years.  

Married several times, Bob was single when he died. He is survived by his children, Mathew Fass, Harbhajan Khalsa, and Owen Hall; and a granddaughter. We join them in mourning his loss.
