Robert H. Higginson ’49

Body

OUR CLASS LOST an outstanding member when Bob Higginson died of a heart attack at his home in West Deal, N.J., Dec. 11, 1993. He had been battling Parkinson's disease for more than five years.

The owner and chairman of Standard Roofings, Inc., in Tinton Falls, N.J., Bob was born in Shrewsbury, N.J., Jan. 30, 1928, and attended Long Branch H.S. At Princeton, he majored in history and was a member of Key and Seal Club.

After graduation, Bob became a salesman for Standard Roofings, a firm his father had built. During the Korean War, he served three years in an army armored division, was discharged as a captain, and remained active in the army reserve until 1956.

In 1955, Bob became president of Standard Roofings, and steadily built the business to an industry giant, with operations in four states. He also owned Bieler Roofing Supply in Florida.

Bob loved Princeton, and reflected it magnificently. He was brilliant in business, had a great sense of style to go with his handsome looks, personal warmth, and the ability to mix easily with tycoons and tradesmen It was impossible not to like him. Equally so with his wife, Betty Ames, the love he had waited for, whom he married prior to our 20th reunion.

In addition to his widow, Betty, Bob is survived by a son, William B., and his mother, Barnetta Keuper. We extend to them our utmost sympathies, and share deeply in their loss of this very special man.
