Robert Hayden Schofield ’55

Bob, an architect with great curiosity and a variety of interests that ranged from archaeology to fishing, died April 14, 2025.
He was born July 5, 1933, in Nyack, N.Y., and attended Nyack High School, where he was active in swimming, tennis, publications, and student government. At Princeton, Bob majored in architecture and was a member of Elm Club. He participated in freshman swimming and IAA football, basketball, and swimming. He was also on the staff of The Princeton Tiger. Senior year he roomed with Paul Wythes and John Collins. After graduation, he served two years in the Navy, mainly on a destroyer, the USS Benner in the Pacific. He earned a bachelor of architecture degree from MIT in 1959, the year he married Barbara Porter. At various times they had homes in Manhattan; Rye, N.Y.; Palm Beach, Fla., and Little Compton, R.I. Bob was managing partner at Schofield & Colgan Architects from 1977 to 1993.
Bob was noted for his intellect and curiosity of spirit. He loved to play golf, fish, paint, and investigate a range of subjects that included science, travel, history, and art.
He was predeceased by his son Porter. Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara; son Robert Jr.; daughter Sarah Schofield Herzog; and three grandchildren.
