Robert Hobbs French ’36

Bob died Feb. 8, 2000, of Alzheimer's. A graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, at Princeton, he majored in history and was undergraduate manager and treas. of Charter Club. He played four years of baseball and was capt. of the varsity his senior year. He turned down a New York Yankees offer to tryout to play for their farm team. He also lettered in 150 lb. football. He graduated in 1940 from Yale law school. He was later a member of the bars of Ohio, New York, and Massachusetts.

During WWII, he served three years in the field artillery headquarters of the 82nd Airborne Division, rising in rank to capt. He participated in eight campaigns, all over Europe, and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Presidential Unit Citation.

He was associated with the Celanese Corporation, was pres. of Canada Dry Bottling Co. of Dayton and Cincinnati, and was an investment executive at Sherson-American Express. He retired in 1983 to enjoy tennis and golf.

His wife, Katherine Grinnell, whom he married in 1949, died in 1982. He is survived by a stepdaughter, Alexandra Pozzi, a stepson, Peter S., and five grandchildren.

Bob was indeed a loyal Princetonian and classmate. He will be remembered.
