Robert A. MacKennan ’51

Bob, the son of Archibald and Jane (Neely) MacKennan, was born Oct. 18, 1929, and lived most of his life in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

He came to Princeton from Andover and earned his bachelor’s degree in history. He was a member of Colonial and on the JV 150-pound crew, rowing on the winning junior varsity crew at the 1950 Henley Regatta. He roomed with Bob Accola, Andy Cobb, Bill Dana, and Homer Franklin.

A 1954 graduate of Harvard Law School, he served for three years in the Marine Corps. In 1960 he married Edith Kunz of Salzburg, Austria. Bob first partnered with his father and later formed the law offices of MacKennan, Coulter & Dunwell in Poughkeepsie. He served on the board of the Poughkeepsie Day School and was an avid gardener.

A man of humor, charm and quiet dignity, he died July 30, 2010, and is survived by his son, Peter; daughter-in-law, Jennifer; sisters, Lois Earle and Jean Marshall; and nephew, T. Matthew Marshall Jr. ’78. Edith predeceased him in 2006. Memorial donations in his memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2 Jefferson Plaza, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
