Bob died March 1, 2017, in Manhasset, N.Y.

He was born in Brooklyn and prepared for Princeton at Brooklyn Poly Prep, where he was editor of the school newspaper and business manager of the yearbook. At Princeton he majored in economics and was a member of Tower Club. Bob was a member of the band and news editor of The Daily Princetonian. After graduation he served in the Marines as the commander of an anti-aircraft battery during the battle at Okinawa.

After discharge in 1946 he worked as a copywriter for Fairchild Publications and as a writer for Grey Advertising. He joined the American Management Association and was involved as a section head in management research. He retired in May 1987 as director of the information department.

Bob’s retirement years were devoted mainly to sailing his Pearson 424 sailboat, which he sailed to Maine 11 times and entered in numerous events, such as the Caribbean 1500 and the Pusser’s Cup race. His community activities included serving as superintendent of the Sunday school at Christ Church in Manhasset.

He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Betts Lee. He is survived by his son, Dr. James Tyler Carpenter; and daughters Dr. Lee Slingluff Carpenter and Robin Carpenter.
