Robert Osborn Jr. ’44 *48

BOB OSBORN died June 5, 1992, following a yearlong illness. His wife, Patricia jean Norman, preceded him in death in May 1987. He is survived by one son, Robert Wade. Bob was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and came to Princeton from BethesdaChevy Chase H.S. At Princeton he majored in economics, winning the Stewart Memorial Scholarship, high honors, and Phi Beta Kappa. He lettered in crosscountry track and was a member of Quadrangle Club, fie roomed with Jim Tichner and Buck James. He began his military service in the Navy O.C.S. at Notre Dame, but resigned and enlisted in the Army and saw action in Europe in Company A, 54th Armored infantry Battalion, in intelligence. Awarded a Purple Heart, he wa5 discharged in late 1945. He worked in Washington before returning to Princeton (19481955) for graduate and doctoral studies. Ultimately he joined IBM. in New York, with whom he remained until retirement. Though a professed agnostic, Bob was the ultimate Christian in honesty and charity. Buck James said of him, "Bob was the most selfless and decent person I have ever known. I would entrust him with anything, and there are only two other people about whom I would say that. We delighted in his presence, saddened terribly by his passing."
