Robert R. Thurber ’26

Body

Bob Thurber, who lived in Nova Scotia for a number of years after retiring, died Jan. 14, 1995, of complications resulting from prostate cancer. He was 91. Bob got his law degree at Harvard, and after practicing in Boston for several years, accepted a position with Textron, Inc., of which he became V.P. and general counsel. After retiring, he was V.P. of Gram Capital Management Corp. until 1979, when he moved to Nova Scotia.

Bob’s father, a graduate of M.I.T., was a commander in the Navy, with the result that Bob lived in a number of cities before entering Princeton. He spent his high-school years at Cenrral H.S. in Washington, D.C., and Punahou Academy in Honolulu. At Princeton, Bob made Phi Beta Kappa in junior year, was involved in numerous activities, including our freshman swimming team, track squad, choir, 1926 Memorial Committee, and Inter-Club Committee. Also, Bob was a captain in R.O.T.C. and president of Arbor Inn.

After law school, while practicing in Boston, Bob served on the Boston Community Fund, was an officer of the fund for three years, and served on the Wellesley Board of Appeals.

Bob and Winifred Warren married Oct. 10, 1931. Winifred died in 1989. Bob is survived by daughter Louise W. Gebhardt, by sons Warren R. and Rohen P., by seven grandchildren (including Thurber ’92), and by two great-grandchildren. We shall greatly miss Bob Thurber, always a strong supporter of the class, and we extend our sympathy to his family.
