ROBERT WALDER THOMPSON, retired professor of high-energy physics at the Univ. of Chicago died Apr. 15, 1994. He was 74. Born and raised in Minneapolis, he earned his bachelor's in physics from the Univ. of Minnesota. He specialized in mass spectrometry at Princeton. WWII relocated him to Los Alamos Natl. Laboratory, where he remained until 1946. After the war, he resumed his studies at M.I.T., where he got his Ph.D. in 1948. He joined the faculty of the Univ. of Indiana, where he taught until 1959. Then, he moved to the Univ. of Chicago, and the high-altitude laboratory at Sunspot, N.Mex. Prof. Thompson retired from Chicago in 1976 for medical reasons. His avocations included ceramic research, piano-playing, and a lifelong devotion to devising improvements for cloud chambers. He is survived by his widow, Lee; three sons; and two daughters. To them all, we extend sincere sympathy.
