Romerio D. Perkins ’74

Body

Romy died Nov. 1, 2021. He came to Princeton from Phillips Academy along with another star running back in our class, the late Walt Snickenberger. Romy starred in football, wrestling, hockey, and lacrosse and roomed at Phillips with future Florida governor Jeb Bush, who once ushered him into a meeting with President George H.W. Bush.

After graduation from Princeton, Romy earned a master’s degree from Florida State University and returned to live in Tallahassee, where he was born and raised. He worked as a business consultant in investment banking, municipal finance, commerce, and urban planning. On the personal side, he was a prolific reader and author of poetry and prose as well as an avid jazz aficionado. He continued to share his poetry with a group of Princeton teammates and friends. He also enjoyed chess, golf, music, and a robust intellectual debate.

Romy is survived by his wife and lifelong partner, Sharon; two daughters, Ila (Ariel) Perkins-Escoto and Sharisse Perkins; and a sister, Jacqueline Perkins.

Remembering a Friend

Finding this just now, as I reflected on the very unhappy/lonely single semester in the fall of ’67 at Andover. I am profoundly saddened that I never got the chance to know Romerio beyond that time in our lives as sophomore football players. Ironically, and sadder yet, I never approached him after the games that we played in college against one another; I was probably too embarrassed about not riding it out in a place that made me feel like a stranger in a strange land.

Sadder yet, living in Orlando since July '04, I was in Tallahassee several times between 2013 and 2016 when my son was a high school pole vaulter. How I wish I had known and been able to reconnect. To his Tiger friends and classmates I send my deepest sympathies. Even as a fellow 15-year-old, he was a wonderful friend and source of support!
