Rudolph Deetjen died unexpectedly Aug. 29, 2011, at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Born in Newark, N.J., he graduated from Montclair Academy. Rudy was active in crew and left Princeton at the completion of his second year. He graduated from the University of Vermont and then became a captain in the Army Reserve.

Rudy attended Columbia University Teachers College and ultimately became headmaster at Brookside School in Montclair, N.J., and then at the Peck School in Morristown, N.J. He served on many community boards and was active in the St. John on the Mountain Anglican Church in Bernardsville, N.J. After moving to Maine, he became active in St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church in Blue Hill.

Rudy is survived by his wife of 50 years, Patricia Ann; their sons, Rudolph and Clifford; and two grandchildren. The class extends sympathy to them in their loss.
