Russell Clarence Mills Jr. ’75

RUSSELL MILLS died of melanoma in N.Y.C., Aug. 9,1991.

Coming to Princeton from Shawnee Mission, Kans., Russell rowed heavyweight crew, freshman year, and was a member of Campus CILIb. He won the Freshman First I lonor Prize and was graduated with highest honors in mathematics and an N.S.F. graduate fellowship.

After two years at M.I.T., however, Russell decided against a career in math. He spent several years working on computer speech recognition and then entered Columbia's doctoral program in computer science. As part of his thesis project, he built a parallel Computer and designed and implemented a computer language for it. Columbia awarded his Ph.D. degree posthumously.

Russell and Sally A. Lewis '76 were married in 1987. After the birth of their first child, Russell Stayed home four days a week to take care of the children, preparing his thesis during their naps. His life after Princeton Was one in which his family and the simple pleasures of life took precedence over conventional ideas Of Success.

In addition to Sally and their children Clarence, Ned, and Jane, Russell is survived by his parents, Margaret and Russell C. Mills Sr., and two brothers and two sisters. To Russell's family, the Class extends deepest sympathy.
