Body

RUSSELL ELLIOTT MILLER *52, professor of history emeritus and university archivist and historian at Tufts Univ., died at his home in Reading, Mass., Jan. 3, 1993, at age 76. Nearly two years ago he had suffered a stroke. Born in Minneapolis in 1916, Russell received both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from the Univ. of Florida in 1937 and 1939, respectively. During WWII, he served in the army air force. He subsequently enrolled in graduate school at Princeton and was awarded a master's degree in 1948 and a doctorate in 1952, both in history. He joined the Tufts faculty of history and produced substantial historical writing, in addition to his teaching career. He authored a two volume history of Tufts Univ. from its founding by Universalist clergy in 1852 to the mid1980s. In addition, he researched a treatise on the history of the Universalist Church in America from 1770 until its merger with the Unitarian Church in 1961. He is survived by his widow, Joyce, of Reading, Mass., to whom we extend sincere condolences.
