Russell F. Tremaine ’61

Russ died Dec. 31, 2024.
Born in Westfield, N.J., he came to us from Choate School. At Princeton, he majored in architecture, rowed lightweight crew, and was in the Flying Club. He took his meals at Key and Seal and roomed with Bill Rough, Mahlon Jones, Hal Lackey, Dave Palmer, Bill Buxton, Contee Seely, Chuck Watson, and Dick Webster. His son Scott described him as “a huge Princeton ’61 fan.”
Following Princeton, Russ earned a masters in architecture at Penn. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the Seabees. As a practicing architect he worked for Shepley Bulfinch in Boston. He spent much time using his architectural skills to rehab older buildings and investing in Boston real estate. He was an active member of the First Parish Church in Milton, Mass., a Unitarian Universalist place of worship focused on helping people live lives of justice, love, learning, and hope. His son, who lived in Europe for 18 years, was able to spend Russ’ last years close to home, living with his father for the last six months of his life and allowing for a reconnection, something his son will hold dear forever.
Russ is survived by Scott; daughter Julie; and grandchildren Lucia, JJ, Quinn, and Brogan.
