Russell Lehn Von Buxton ’29

Body

BUCK DIED Nov. 22, 1991. He had prepared for college at Episcopal High School, Alexandria, Va. At Princeton, he was on the track squad and was treasurer of Terrace Club. His roommates were Bud Smith, Fred Haines, and Bod Bodman.

He attended the Univ. of Pennsylvania Medical School and interned at Philadelphia General Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic. He returned to Newport News in 1937 to take over the ElizabethBuxton Hospital, which had been founded by his father. Eventually he sold the hospital to the Bernadine Sisters, who renamed it the Mary immaculate Hospital, but he continued his medical work there as chief of staff. He served as president of numerous medical groups, including the Medical Society of Virginia and the TriState Medical Assn.

Perhaps Buck's greatest pride was his major role in the founding of the Hampton Roads Academy, of which he was the first board chair and upon whose board he continued until 1988.

Sailing was his great hobby, and he was commodore of the Hampton Yacht Club. He was a member of the James River Country Club and belonged to St. Paul's Church. During his service on the Newport News City council, he was active in furthering the merger of the cities of Warwick and Newport News.

In 1935 Buck married Elinor Hedrick. After Elinor's death, Buck married Virginia Armfield in 1960. She survives, as do two sons, Joseph T. II and Russell Jr., and two stepsons, Charles G. Armfield and Robert W. Armfield.

The Class extends deep sympathy to Buck's family.
