S. Lester Block ’38
WITH THE PASSING of Lester Block Sept. 1, 1993, the class has lost one of its most loyal and distinguished classmates.
Lester's keen intellect was immediately recognized when an undergraduate, and he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with high honors. At Penn Law School, which he entered promptly after graduation, he was elected editor of the law review. His calm manner, his flexible mind, and his ability to listen carefully to what others said enabled him to achieve national recognition as a labor lawyer and impartial arbitrator.
After serving as a captain in the army signal corps, Lester began working in NYC. He had a long career with R. H. Macy's & Co., which culminated as senior V.P. and counsel for labor and government relations. Upon his retirement from Macy's, he served as an arbitrator for the New York Stock Exchange and as consultant to Princeton on personnel affairs.
The considerable attendance at the memorial service held in the Univ. Chapel attested to Lester's contribution to the Princeton community as a member of the boards of its hospital his wife of almost 50 years, and to his two sons, John '70 and Dick '73, the class extends its deepest sympathies.
