S. Whitney Landon ’17

Body

Whit died Feb. 3, 1995, in Seaside, Oreg., after a brief illness. He was 98.

Having come to Princeton from Vermont and Bordentown (N.J.) Military Academy, Whit was valedictorian and Phi Beta Kappa in physics and math, in Arch Club, Triangle, and the orchestra. He was in the Coast Artillery at graduation and a captain with the American Expeditionary Force in France in WWI. He was a lawyer with AT&T from 1934-61; he retired as a v.p. and secretary. He also served on the Midlantic Bank and American Stock Exchange boards, and was director of the American Arbitration Assn.

Whit served the Turrell Fund from 1941-90, served the university as a fund chairman and trustee, and also served the New Jersey Symphony, B.M.I., Victoria Foundation, Shelburne Museum, Edison Birthplace, the Orange (N.J.) Hospital, Y.M.C.A., and Community Chest, among ochers.

With his late wife, Isabelle, Whit lived in West Orange, N.J., and Greensboro, Vt. He moved last year to Oregon to live with his daughter Margot Visher. He is survived by her and by sons S. Whitney '47 and Richard, daughter Lisa Hewett, 13 grandchildren (including S. Whitney '76), and 17 great-grandchildren.

He only missed one or two reunions. We will miss this good and loyal Princetonian and extend our sympathies to the entire family.
