SABRA FOLLETT TOBACK died of cancer Mar. 29, 1994, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She was born in 1923 in New Haven, Conn., and got her B.A. at Barnard College in 1945. She was number one in her class there and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She got her M.A. from Columbia in 1948. Then, she taught at Douglas College in New Jersey.

In 1961, she was admitted to the graduate school as the first female graduate degree candidate at Princeton, and got her Ph.D. in Oriental languages and literature. Then, she went back to teaching at Douglas College, where she stayed until 1970. Later, she went to Dutchess County Community College in Poughhkeepsie, N.Y., where she served as dean of academic affairs and acting president. Afterward, she returned to reaching at S.U.N.Y.-New Paltz, where she taught until she retired in 1991.

First married to Edward B. Meserve, she is the mother of three sons, Roger, Richard, and Michael. Her second marriage, to Arnold Toback, made her stepmother to his two sons. To her family and all her friends, we offer sincere sympathy.
