Body

SAMUEL BILLINGS CUMMINGS JR., Spencer and Wolfe Professor of Psychology Emeritus at Kenyon College in Ohio, died Oct. 8, 1994, after a long illness. He was 89. Born in Irwin, Penn., he got his bachelor's from Amherst College in 1926 and then studied at the Sorbonne in Paris as a Simpson Fellow. In 1928, he earned a master's at Columbia. He then taught for several years at Dartmouth, Syracuse, and Princeton, before getting his Ph.D. at Princeton.

He joined the Kenyon faculty as an associate professor of psychology. During WWII, he spent three years in the Navy Medical Corps. After the war, he returned to Kenyon. He retired in 1971. A fund of $1 million was raised by his friends and was used to establish the Samuel B. Cummings Jr. Professorship in Psychology at Kenyon. Contributions to this fund may be sent to Kenyon. He is survived by several cousins, to whom we extend sincere sympathy in his passing.
