SAM WAS BORN and raised in Cincinnati, and died there Mar. 19, 1994, after a short bout with a virulent case of pneumonia. Entering Princeton from Hotchkiss, Sam lived in Henry Hall in the entry built in memory of his father, Samuel E Pogue '04. Sam majored in music and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with high honors.

After serving in the army air corps, he received a retailing degree from N.YU. and entered the family departmentstore business, In 1961, he went back to his beloved Princeton and earned a finearts degree and a doctorate in musicology.

Returning home, Sam became a professor at the Univ. of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music; he was later named to serve as its acting dean. He soon became an important influence in the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the May Festival, the opera, and other organizations, to which he donated much time, talent, and money. He was also involved with the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund for the New York state board of regents.

Sam is remembered by all he touched for his kindness, gentleness, and graciousness. The class extends its sympathy to his widow, Irmela; his son Seth; his stepsister Helen Eustis; two stepchildren; and four step grandchildren.
