Samuel Edgar Englehart ’49

Body

Sam died April 15, 2010. At the time of his death, he was our class secretary.

After graduating from Dormont (Pa.) High School, Sam enlisted in the Navy and was an avionics electrician based in Pensacola, Fla. At the end of World War II, he was assigned to the V-12 program and enrolled in Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., later transferring to Princeton. After graduation, he accepted a commission in the Marine Corps, serving in Korea and Vietnam. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1969.

Sam’s second career was devoted to educating young adults. He taught management and computer science at Montgomery College in Rockville, Md., and retired as chairman of the business technologies department at Dutchess County Community College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in 1997.

He was a voracious and eclectic reader, a seasoned debater, an avid sailor, and an instrument-licensed private pilot.

Sam was predeceased by his sister Ann; brother William; and son David. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; a sister, Maribeth Moore; daughters Ann Parvin and Lauren Englehart; son Paul; and nine grandchildren. He will be remembered as a wise man, respected mentor, faithful friend, loving father and grandfather, and devoted husband.
