Samuel F. Gordon Jr. ’50
Fitz died Dec. 8, 1994, at his home in Bumpass, Va., of lung cancer. Engaged in the construction business in St. Louis for many years, he retired in 1991 and moved to Virginia. There he and Claire, his wife of 38 years, took great pleasure in building their own house.
Fitz prepared at St. Louis Country Day School. He graduated from Princeton with a major in economics, and later got a B.S. in civil engineering from Washington Univ. in St. Louis. At Princeton he belonged to Colonial Club and roomed with Steve Post, Bill Sant, and Hoyt Thompson. Fitz served in the Navy for a year prior to Princeton and later was a Marine lieutenant in the Korean War.
Always active in his community, Fitz was a vestryman of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and a board member of Edgewood Children's Center and the Community School in St. Louis and of the Montpelier, Va., Center for Arts and Education. A convivial friend to many of us, he withstood his final illness with courage and good spirit.
Fitz is survived by his widow, Claire; sons Samuel F. III and Clifford T.; daughter Jane Love; mother; and sister Julie Marrin. To all his family, the class extends its deepest sympathy.
