Sam died Aug. 24, 2016, in Naples, Fla. He battled cancer for two years.

Born in Harrisburg, Pa., Sam grew up in Hershey, where his father was president of the Hershey Chocolate Corp. He prepared for Princeton at The Hill School, where he was varsity tennis captain. He brought his tennis skills to Princeton, playing varsity tennis for three years. A politics major, Sam belonged to Quadrangle Club and drilled with the Navy ROTC.

After two years of sea duty, Sam joined First National City Bank (later Citibank) in New York City, and in 1963 married Elaine Cameron, beginning their 53-year marriage. Sam’s tennis racket was never far away; he played for the New York Athletic Club while in New York. In 1983 Sam, then a vice president at Citibank, joined Atlantic National Bank in West Palm Beach, Fla., to head up its commercial banking department, later moving to U.S. Trust Co. in Naples, Fla.

Sam continued to excel at tennis, winning numerous local, state, and even national championships in the seniors bracket. He combined his devotion to tennis with devotion to community service and to Princeton, serving in several Annual Giving and regional capacities and as president of the Princeton Club of Southwest Florida.

Sam is survived by Elaine, three children, a brother, and seven grandchildren. We have sent condolences.
