Samuel Keene Mitchell ’36

Keene died Jan. 20, 1995, of esophageal cancer. A graduate of Wyoming Seminary, he majored in classics at Princeton and was a member of Campus Club. After Princeton, he received his law degree from Yale. In WWII, he served in the Army Air Force and then with the American Red Cross in England and Austria.

A longtime partner of the Wilkes Barre, Penn., law firm of Darling, Mitchell and Schooley, Keene made time to serve his community of Kingston, Penn. He was a former president of its Borough Council, was active in the Grace Episcopal Church and the Kirby Episcopal House, and was chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Bethlehem. He also served several other community organizations. He was active in the alumni affairs of Wyoming Seminary, was past president of the Princeton Alumni Assn. of Northeastern Pennsylvania, was a regional chairman for Princeton's Annual Giving program, and was a member of our class executive committee.

In a life filled with accomplishments, dedicated to family, profession, church, and community, highlights were the norm. He was a kind, amusing, caring person, naturally attracting and retaining friends.

Keene survived a son W. Brewster '74 and is survived by his widow, Mary; a son Samuel Keene III '68; daughters Polly and Martha ; granddaughters Anne '96, Elisabeth, and Colby; and brother John S.
