Samuel Taylor Bodine ’39

Body

SAM DIED Dec. 22, 1991, at Waverly Heights, Gladwynne, Penn. Throughout a long final illness, he was, as always, a good sport, clinging to a philosophy he said he picked up from a Dean Wicks sermon based on a twoword text: "Go on." Gregarious, genial, and steady, Sam had the grace to accept the physical handicap which kept him out of most team sports, turning instead to rowing.

After college Sam earned his M.A. at Harvard, in 1941, and then joined the faculty of St. Paul's (his oldprep school) as teacher, housemaster, and crew coach. In 1954 he moved to Germantown Academy, where he was head of the modern languages department and director of studies, until he retired 21 years later. Through all these years he cherished his summers at"Stony Rock," his camp at Upper Saranac Lake. There he was vestryman at the Church of the Ascension and a member of the board of the Center for Music, Drama and the Arts.

In 1961 Sam married Pauline Parsons, whom he called a loving wife and (step) mother to his four children: sons Samuel T. Jr. and Peter and daughters Penelope and Marian. He also had four grandchildren. Tothem we offer our sympathy, thankful that for all of us,happy memories of our old friend will go on.
