Sandy died Feb. 19, 2012, in Woodbridge, Va.

Sandy left Princeton in 1942 to join the Army and served as a noncommissioned officer in the Pacific. After graduating summa cum laude in 1947, Sandy began a long career in the Foreign Service. In 1955, he returned to Princeton and spent a year of advanced study at the Woodrow Wilson School. This was followed by assignments in Washington, D.C., the Netherlands, and Costa Rica, where he served as deputy chief of mission.

After retiring, Sandy and his wife, Julie, moved to Spotsylvania, Va., where he was involved with Christ Episcopal Church. He later moved to Woodbridge to be near his daughter. Despite his problems with failing eyesight, he maintained a positive outlook and showed remarkable courage.
