Seaton Grantland Barnes ’36

Body

After preparing at the Episcopal School in Alexandria, Va., Barney majored in economics at Princeton. He was on the freshman baseball and wrestling teams and belonged to Cap and Gown.

Barney worked in textile manufacturing and banking until World War II. He joined the Navy and participated in the Aleutian Islands campaign. Later he served in the Navy’s ordnance bureau in Washington and rose to the rank of lieutenant commander.

In 1946 Barney married Kathryn Johnson, a Navy WAVE, in Fairmont, Minn. Barney and his bride settled in Griffin, where Barney established a ready-mixed concrete business, farmed his family property, developed real estate, and participated faithfully in the life of the community. Barney’s hobbies included bird hunting and mowing his fields. He once played golf with Bobby Jones.

Kathryn died in 1994, and Barney married Bettie Lee Clouse in 1997. Bettie Lee predeceased him by a few months. He is survived by his daughters, Kathryn Hendricks and Susan Inman; his sister, Mrs. John Cheatham; and five grandchildren. We feel their pain at the loss of this thoroughly decent and honorable man.
