Sherburn M. Becker ’28

Body

SHERB BECKER DIED Oct. 18, 1993, in N.Y.C. He had suffered for some time with emphysema. He prepared for college at Exeter. At Princeton, he majored in French, was a member of Tiger Inn, and rowed on the crew (he was captain senior year).

Sherb worked for almost his entire career with the investment securities firm Fahnestock and Co. He retired as a senior partner. He entered the navy during WWII, and attained the rank of lt. comdr. He was an air combat intelligence officer, and served aboard several aircraft carriers, with shore duty in Daytona Beach, Fla. He was active in local charities and pursued bird-shooting, fishing, golf, and tennis in his leisure time.

Sherb married Mildred Barclay Vander Poel Nov. 15, 1928. Their son, Sherburn III, predeceased Sherb. Sherb is survived by his widow, his daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren.

Sherb was a very loyal Princetonian and was a faithful member of the class executive committee. He attended our 50th, 55th, and 60th reunions. He devoted a large amount of his interest to the Friends of Princeton Rowing. We shall miss Sherb's enthusiastic presence at 1928 gatherings and we extend our deep sympathy to Mildred and their family.
