Sherwood Harris ’54

Born in New York City, Sherwood graduated from Deerfield Academy. He majored in English at Princeton, was a member of Tiger Inn, and was associate managing editor of The Daily Princetonian. He graduated from Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I., and the Navy’s flight school in Pensacola, Fla. He became a bomber carrier pilot on the U.S.S. Roosevelt and continued flying in the Navy Reserve for 17 more years. Sherwood continued training pilots part time in Danbury, Conn.  

His career included editorial work for The Saturday Evening Post, American Illustrated, Reader’s Digest, and his own editorial consulting firm, Harris Associates. In 1994 he became publications manager for the Washington Cathedral and retired in 1997.

Sherwood’s first wife, Lorna, and their daughter, Maggie, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Nichols Shiver-Harris; son Michael; daughters Sue and Kathy; stepdaughter Lela; eight grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. The class extends its sympathy to them.
