Sibley W. Hoobler ’33

Body

SIB HOOBLER, a world authority on hypertension, died Jan. 25, 1994, in Tucson. He had a heart attack while playing tennis and died instantly.

Sib was born Apr. 30, 1911, in N.Y.C. He prepared at Mercersburg. In college, he roomed with Don Woolverton and was a member of Arbor Inn and Phi Beta Kappa. After college, Sib studied at Johns Hopkins Medical School, receiving degrees in medicine and biochemistry. He spent many years at the Univ. of Michigan Medical School, where he founded a hypertension clinic. He later joined the faculty of Case Western Reserve.

Sib was active in many areas. He gave land in northern Michigan to the Nature Conservancy. In addition to many medical writings, he wrote a memoir, ADVENTURES IN MEDICINE, from which an excerpt appeared in the '33 summer newsletter in 1992.

Sib married Katherine Taylor in 1940. She died many years ago. Later, he married Kay Herbolsheimer, who survives, as do his son Raymond and daughter Patricia Schock; stepsons Paul and Rodney Oppmann; and stepdaughter Gretchen Anderson. His cousin Fred Sibley '34, also survives. The class expresses its deep sympathy to the family. We have lost a most distinguished member.
