Spencer Coryell Ridgway ’36

AT THE AGE OF 76, Spencer died Nov. 7, 1991, of a heart attack. He was the son of Charles D. Ridgway Jr. '05 and the grandson of Charles D. Ridgway 1869. Other deceased relatives were judge Thomas Haight '00 and William C. Ridgway Jr. '29.

Spencer graduated from Montclair (N.J.) High School, and at Princeton he majored in economics and was a member of Charter Club. He graduated in 1949 from Scion Hall Law School and practiced law for many years in Chatham, N.J. In WWII, he volunteered, in 1942, for U.S. Army duty, graduated from officers candidate school and served at Fort Hood, Tex,, with a tank destroyer unit. He retired from active clut in late 1945 with the rank of first lieutenant.

In the 1970s, Spencer served Princeton well as chairman of Annual Giving for the Chatham area.

He married Virginia Lee Tomlinson in 19775. They moved from Chatham to Norfolk, Va., in 1978. There he was an elder of the Third Presbyterian Church. At the time of his death, he was associated with the Commonwealth Moving Company.

Spencer is survived by Virginia; daughters Peggy Ann and Susan Mary, from a previous marriage; stepdaughter Carolyn I. Hubbard; and brothers Charles D. 111 '36 and Whitman '39.

It has been some years since we last saw or heard from Spencer. He will be remembered by his many friends in the Class.
