Stephen Bartow Strang Jr. ’57

Body

Bart died Dec. 3, 2009. According to his wife, Mary, the cause of his death was the Korean War wounds he suffered. He had been in a wheelchair for more than three years, had more than 23 surgeries, 50 years of pain medications, and several mini-strokes. His memorial service will be held on June 7.

Bart came to Princeton as a vet with maturity and a well-respected background. He joined Colonial, where he was bicker chairman and president; majored in history; and rowed heavyweight crew and was captain in 1957.

After graduation, Bart entered the ranching business with his father in Golden, Colo. Ranching became his love. In 1960, he bought Big Four Ranch, where he raised Hereford cattle under the logo Strang Herefords.

Bart was a school board member for 12 years. He served as director of the Colonial Hereford Association and was its president from 1978 to 1980. According to Mary, Bart believed “individuality has become a stigma” and that “initiative of the individual is penalized for the benefit of the non-productive.”

The class will miss this fine man and sends deepest sympathy to Mary, Bart’s wife of 51 years; their daughters, Mary, Ellen, Lisa, and Sarah; and 11 grandchildren.
