Coerte died at his home in Merry Point, Va., Oct. 22, 2012. He entered Princeton from Lawrenceville, where he was on the football and soccer teams and rowed crew.

At Princeton, he majored in biology and was a member of Colonial Club. Coerte, who was known as “Stretch,” rowed on the varsity crew and sang with the Glee Club and choir. His roommates included Herb Jones, D.C. Davenport, Leaming Smith, and Bob Veghte.

Coerte left Princeton at the end of junior year to enter Cornell Medical School. He served as a PT boat commander in the South Pacific in World War II. His career was with Amherst Coal Co. in Charleston, W. Va., from which he retired in 1987 after 35 years of service.

His wife, Adeline (the sister of our classmate Herb Jones), died in 2011. He leaves two sons, Stephen Jr. and Peter; two daughters, Nancy and Sarah; and six grandchildren. To them, the class sends its condolences.
