Steve died July 27, 2025, in Annandale, Va.

He came to Princeton from Port Washington (N.Y.) High School, majored in SPIA, and joined Dial Lodge. After graduation, he served for three years as a navigation officer on the destroyer USS Halsey Powell. In 1956, he met and married his wife, Kent, and joined the Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer for a career lasting 37 years with posts in many countries throughout Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. His career concluded with a U.S. Ambassadorship to Swaziland (now Eswatini). Kent was herself a fixture at 1952 Reunions until her sad death in 2017.

After retiring, he and Kent spent much time with their church, their community, and traveling.

He collected degrees from Columbia (MA in economics 1956), Harvard (MPA 1962), and Industrial College of the Armed Forces (1970 and went on to teach economics there). After retiring he served as our class president for several years.

Steve is survived by his children Kryston ’79 (Tim) Fischer, Halsey ’86 (Aromie Noe), Julia (Smiley Nelson), and John ’88 (Gigi Garcia-Rogers); grandchildren Sam (Chelsea Ball), Will, Tajin ’20, Tayae, Liz, Kyle, and Lucas; and great-grandson Nolan.
