Stephen Mantell ’78

Stephen came to Princeton after his junior year at Princeton Day School, bringing with him his faithful cocker spaniel, Bowser. He majored in English and directed plays at Theatre Intime and Wilson College.  

Stephen lived in Chappaqua, N.Y., where he coached youth soccer and baseball and served on many local boards, including Temple Beth El and the Chappaqua School Foundation. He served as class treasurer in the 1980s. Along with his wife, Harriet Fier, he founded FM Productions, directing and producing many award-winning educational films, among them Thomas Jefferson: The Pursuit of Liberty, which is screened daily at Monticello.

Stephen will always be remembered for his generous and optimistic spirit. He is survived by Harriet; his children, Laura and Will; his mother, Marianne; brothers David and Michael ’80; his sister, Eva; and among his in-laws, Merrell Noden ’78.  

The class extends deepest sympathy to Stephen’s family.
