Stephen T. Hagerman ’30

Body

STEVE HAGERMAN DIED Dec. 6, 1991, at the King James Care Center in Chatham Township, NJ. Born in East Orange, he spent most of his life in Maplewood, before moving to Short Hills.

Steve arrived at Princeton from South Orange High School. At Princeton he was a member of the gym team, the IntraCollegiate Athletic Association, and Court Club. Jack Curran was his roommate for four years.

Having majored in physics, it was natural for Steve to join Bell Labs in New York after graduation. He remained there for three years, after which he decided on a career in air conditioning and refrigeration. He was first with Carrier Corp., stationed in Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Honolulu. In 1937 his wife, Helen, flew out to Manila, on one of the first transPacific clippers, to marry Steve. In 1955 he joined Johnson Controls and was manager of their international sales division. He retired in 1971, following which he spent six years selling fire and safety equipment. Steve spent the war years working in air conditioning and refrigeration for the armed forces of the U.S. and its allies.

Steve had a lifelong interest in tennis and was a member of the U.S. Davis Cup Tennis Committee in charge of the U.S. zone. He was a member of the Short Hills Club.

Steve is survived by his widow, Helen; a son Peter; a daughter Judith Gould; and four grandchildren. Our deep sympathy is extended to them.
